My name is Liam and I work at the St John Ambulance national headquarters in London. Part of my role is to develop new community projects and as such I have been developing a First Aid for Carers training package. The course is tailored specifically for the needs of informal carers and can be delivered in one 5 hour session covering topics such as how to initially assess someone, use of the recovery position, burns and scalds, chest pains and dealing with minor and major bleeds. We were also able to offer additional "opt in" modules on other areas including choking, strokes, head injuries and seizures.
I spent a number of months developing and piloting the course materials; taking on board feedback from course attendees. The courses were delivered in carers centres which are part of the Carers Trust network in local communities around London. I am now working on securing funding to be able to offer this course to carers on a national basis. It may be a number of months - or even years - until this is widely available, however I wanted to write a post on here to demonstrate that this is something that is currently being worked on.
I will aim to write another blog post when I have more news regarding funding and when the course is hopefully more widely available.
