The talk I went to today

Postby wendy » 18 Mar 2015, 16:58

It was about the history of Norwich and wool making

I will try and find as much information for you as I can, but I quickly found these photos.
I have made some notes and will type them out as soon as I can.

Traditionally, the Norwich weavers worked in their own homes (where some had separate workrooms) or in a small family-run workshops, not in factories.

a few notes that I made.

Whatever Happened to the Textile Trade?
The wool industry in Norwich

During the 11th century, Norwich was the largest city in England after London, and one of the most important places in the kingdom. Until the Industrial Revolution, Norwich was the capital of the most populous county in England.

Norwich Castle was founded soon after the Norman Conquest

East Harling in Norfolk was famous for its sheep fairs, when people came from across the country.
They stopped in the 1930's.
1745 -60 there were 16,000 hand looms in Norwich.

Some of the bollards which you will find around the city, show the rose medler on top, like the photo above.
This was used by the dyers and at one time the local river Wensum changed colour to red.

The wealth generated by the wool trade throughout the Middle Ages financed the construction of many fine churches; consequently, Norwich still has more medieval churches than any other city in Western Europe north of the Alps.
Then our money came from the wool trade and industry later on, but today there is no industry and we rely on the tourist trade, our good schools and UEA, The Sainsbury Centre, the John Innes Centre but mostly shopping.
We have 2 famous Malls. The Castle Mall and Chapelfield.
