Alzheimer's Research UK in Cambridge has announced it is to pump £30 million into fast-tracking new drug treatments for the disease. It comes on the same day a molecule has been discovered which could provide a new method for fighting the condition.
Nearly a million people suffer from the illness, but with one dementia researcher for every six scientists looking at cancer treatments, breakthroughs like this new discovery have been rare.
Now the charity is to create three new dedicated research centres, including one in Cambridge, aimed at speeding up medical research.
"We really need to have huge investments in research to be able to finance and help people who have dementia, so £30million investment is huge for us, for Alzheimers Research UK but really we need to have more concerted efforts and we need to be able to fund more exciting projects"
