Motorists are being warned to avoid Norwich city centre, with huge traffic jams even causing problems for police.

The majority of the city’s car parks are full, with queues on to roads creating extra delays, and bus services have also been hit.
As streets became gridlocked, @NorfolkPolice tweeted “Very heavy traffic in Norwich, please consider using Park & Ride if visiting the city”
The force’s city account @NorwichPoliceUK added “If you’re stuck in traffic in #Norwich be patient, there are no accidents just weight of numbers. We’re also stuck so #ShareYourPain”
First Norwich reported delays to all Norwich network services due to “exceptionally heavy” traffic in the city centre and apologised to all affected.
And Norfolk County Council officers said most Norwich city centre car parks were full and queues were causing some traffic disruption. Meanwhile many members of the public took to Twitter to voice their frustration.
Jon Mooney, writing @jonboymoonshine, said “Norwich is at a complete standstill. A result of @NorwichCC “traffic improvements” over the last few months?”
