Carers are being encouraged to contact Lancashire County Council and Carers Lancashire to benefit from the free advice, information and practical support they are entitled to.

Three in five people will be carers at some point in their lives and there are a wide range of services set up to help people across the county.

Joanne Miller, carers’ strategy officer at Lancashire County Council, has said that the latest research indicates many carers are unaware of the assistance available. “You are entitled to free help and support that could really change your life – or perhaps you’d just like a brew and a chat,” she said. “If you look after a relative, partner, friend or neighbour who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems, you are one of the county’s estimated 130,000 carers.”

The Peace of Mind scheme for example ensures someone is ready to step in 24/7 if a carer is caught up in an unforeseen situation. Currently, approximately 6,000 carers have a “Peace of Mind” plan in place and utilise the free service that does not involve social services assessments. In addition, there are a number of countywide social events to give carers the opportunity for some “me time” and grants are also available to help people “take a break”.

Our Carers Link have been offering the Peace of Mind Scheme for 3 years now, I am in a similar scheme run by the red Cross, & now LCC advertising it as if it is something new. Still, hopefully this campaign will be informative for new carers
