Nurse Edith Cavell

1915 Despite international protests, Edith Cavell, an English nurse in Belgium, was sentenced to death in Brussels by Germans, for aiding the escape of Allied prisoners. She was born in Swardeston, close to Norwich and there is a memorial to her outside Norwich Cathedral.

Edith Cavell was the World War I British nurse who is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers in Brussels from all sides without distinction. She and Belgian and French colleagues helped over 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. 

She was arrested, tried with 33 others by a German military court, found guilty of ‘assisting men to the enemy’ and shot by a German firing squad on October 12 1915.

There is also a statue outside the Cathedral in Tombland, which has recently been restored for the WW! commemorations

..there is also a pub opposite her statue above named after her - on the corner of the pub on the top floor, it has a huge blakc and white picture of her as the pub sign...

PS... Bearing in mind her famous quote about patriotism not being enough... I wonder what she thinks of the inscription on the statue?

I am a little bit annoyed, I was going to go to the 18th event as advertised on the Edith Cavell website, I have just seen in the ENews that they had it today ..
