Welcome To My WW2 Home Front Pages

Postby wendy » 01 Sep 2014, 08:35

Welcome to my Home Front pages of memories long ago
Of all that we had to endure to help conquer our deadly foe.
Many things we went without, even petrol was on rations
Food and furniture was short and coupons for our fashions.
Dig for Victory posters and many for Walls have ears
Songs and music to help us cope with our everyday fears.
Running in and out of shelters during bombing raids too
Queuing up for two sausages, that is what we had to do.
Waiting for news of a loved one, letters were SO rare
When you got a letter you would want others to come and share.
Very often with SWALK or ITALY written across the back
Their way of saying they loved you to help you keep track.
HOLLAND was another loving message scribbled on a letter
If only they were coming home that would be so much better.
Yes it was tough going but everyone helped each other
No class distinction then, we were the same as one another.
A sense of working together helped get us through hard times
Which lasted right through until we heard the Victory chimes.
So please come in my site and share the memories of very long ago
See things that I have gathered of that time which are now on show.
If you've enjoyed your tour down memory lane tell others to come look
And please feel free to tell me your thoughts by signing my guest book.

For those of you who are puzzled by the capital letters that were written on the backs of envelopes from loved ones here is the explanation.
It's rather similar to the text messaging of today.

S.W.A.L.K. means Sealed With A Loving Kiss.
I.T.A.L.Y. means I Trust And Love You.
H.O.L.L.A.N.D. meant Hope Our Love Lives And Never Dies.
