Norwich Library - 1994 Fire

Postby chenrezig » 01 Aug 2014, 06:27

On the  1st August 1994 Norwich Library caught fire and was burnt down - the cause a faulty light fitting..

I took these pics the day after ...

I looked out of my bedroom window that morning and saw all this smoke over the city and wondered what it was .. Then we heard on the radio about the fire .. We had to go into the city, dad drove up Grapes Hill to get to the car park and the Hill was covered in hoses  that ran all the way along the roads into the city to the library. When we got parked up we went to take a look, a large crowd were there watching the last of the flames being put out - we weren't the only ones in tears at the thought of all those books and archives going up in smoke...

I counted at least 14 fire engines there ...

thank you Liz.
I remember it clearly and watching the smoke from my bedroom window.
It does not seem like 20 years ago.
