The Swardeston-born nurse helped 200 Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium during the First World War, before she was executed by firing squad.

A coin to honour Edith Cavell was requested by ex-Army officer Dan Jarvis, Labour MP for Barnsley Central, at Treasury questions in the Commons.

Mr Osborne, who is also Master of the Royal Mint, has agreed to take it up with the Mint’s advisory committee.

A petition bearing more than 100,000 signatures was delivered to the Treasury last month by relatives of Cavell.
Coins are set to be released over the next five years to mark the Great War.

The campaign follows last year’s successful campaign to put author Jane Austen on the back of £10 notes after a public outcry that every banknote featured a man.

This lady should not be forgotten, I hope the Chancellor agrees.
