The Aurora Borealis - better known as the Northern Lights - has been giving rare and spectacular displays over parts of the UK, from the north of Scotland to as far south as Essex and Gloucestershire.

The lights have also been clearly visible in places such as Orkney, Norfolk, and south Wales.

PS reminded me of that song I used to have a single of ...

Just wanted to add these from the Daily Mail ...

The Norfolk lights! Skies over East Anglia turn red and green by stunning display of the Aurora Borealis

Such light displays in the sky often occur in the Arctic and Antarctic regions
Are caused by the collision of particles from the sun entering the earth's atmosphere
Stargazers in Norfolk, Essex and South Wales were treated to a stunning display of the Aurora Borealis

Over Norfolk

Stargazers wowed by the aurora - but will we see it again tonight?

Photographs of the phenomenon – caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with our atmosphere – have been circulating on social networks overnight and this morning as people across the county fell under the spell of the dancing lights.

Duty forecaster at Weatherquest, Steve Western, this morning explained that the Vikings used to call the phenomenon “the bridge to Valhalla”.

He added that the Aurora may return over the weekend.

“It is quite likely that over the next few days we may see it again. The only problem will be the cloudy weather.

Stargazing fans in Norfolk could be in for another Northern Lights spectacle tonight.

Mr Thompson said the last time he witnessed an impressive aurora borealis in Norfolk was 20 years ago.

He added there was a chance people could see a similar display in the county tonight and over the next few weeks.

The best places to see it would be far south of the county or north of Norwich, away from light pollution.
