Winter is here! SNOW and temperatures of -5 to hit UK

By AOL Travel, Jan 25, 2014

The recent mild but wet weather will this week be replaced by freezing temperatures as a low pressure system moving in over the Atlantic could pull in a cold snap from the Arctic.

Night time temperatures will plummet to -5 while even snow is expected to fall in some parts of Britain.

Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel, told Aol Travel: "There's a snow risk at first on Sunday, mainly in higher parts of the Pennines and northwards, but then it will turn colder more generally on Sunday night, with a snow risk across Wales, Midlands and much of northern Britain

"On Monday morning areas from Norfolk and Lincolnshire northwards across northern England to Scotland could wake up to a few centimetres of snow, with five to 10cm over higher parts of northern England.

Next week looks drier and a bit colder, with winds from the east or north east from Tuesday to Thursday. "There will be some wintry showers at times moving from the east," says Leon.

"By Friday there is a risk of snow even at lower levels across the northern half of the country and rain in the south, although there could be snow over the Midlands too."

Leon added: "Next week, a deep area of low pressure will move southwards with a cold, very windy and showery weather pattern at first. The showers will be wintry with snow over higher hills and perhaps to lower levels for a time in the north.

"The end of next week could see the colder weather over Scandinavia reach us with night frosts, although the Atlantic weather systems could possibly hold the colder weather back.

There have been trains cancelled, tress down and warnings about frost and ice ...

Storms have battered Norfolk today, causing problems on road an rail, while motorists are being warned to expect icy patches on roads on Sunday morning as temperatures plunge. And the Eastern region has been lashed by a storm today, with fallen trees causing problems on road and rail.

A storm swept over areas including King’s Lynn, Fakenham, Swaffham, Wymondham, Wroxham, Norwich, Ormesby, Cromer and Sheringham, with thunder rumbles and lightning flashes. Norfolk police used social network Twitter to warn about fallen trees. They said: “If you are out on Norfolk’s roads please take care as we are getting reports of trees down- slow down arrive safe.” Inspector Keith Philpott said motorists needed to be mindful. Between 4.30pm and 5pm, Norfolk Constabulary received 15 calls in relation to fallen trees around the county. “The most serious one was in Gooderstone where a tree has fallen on a vehicle. There are reports of up to 12 fallen trees on the A1065 towards Mundford,” Insp Philpott added. Fire crews from Downham Market, Watton and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service’s urban search and rescue team went to Gooderstone just before 4.30pm. While the driver was already safely out of the car, fire crews used chainsaws to make the scene safe and remove fallen branches from the road. Emergency services were also called to Watermill Lane in Hoxne where a tree had fallen on a car. The urban search and rescue team used chainsaws to make the scene safe.

Crews were also called to the A1075 in Thetford after three cars crashed. One person was cut free by firefighters. Cambridgeshire police tweeted: “We’re urging motorists to take care and only use roads for essential journeys after reports of fallen trees and standing water on the roads”.

And Greater Anglia reported that trains to and from Norwich and London had been affected after a tree fell onto overhead wires at Chelmsford. London bound rail services are not running beyond Colchester and services from London via Chelmsford are suspended. Alterations and cancellations can be seen here.

The rail operator said the problem was on the line between Ingatestone and Chelmsford, blocking the lines. It has caused delays of 90 minutes and cancellations. First Capital Connect is accepting Greater Anglia tickets to and from Cambridge via King’s Cross for connections to Norwich and Ipswich. And the Sheringham to Norwich line is suspended due to a signnal fault caused by a lightning strike.

There were reports of power cuts in Thetford, with UK Power Networks taking to Twitter to say: “We apologise that due to high volumes of calls, customers may be experiencing longer wait times than normal.”

Weatherquest, based at the UEA, said the showers will become more isolated overnight. But they are predicting a touch of frost overnight with icy patches on roads in the morning. Norfolk County Council is also warning of cold conditions overnight with icy conditions. Gritters will be in action later. Brighter conditions are expected for early Monday, but there could be some sleet in the morning.

Wet n cold here too - I briefly popped into the city to get some stick-on velcro for the dog coats - got the 10.35 in, was waiting at the bus stop home at 11.06! People on the buses were talking about the big bang of thunder last night about 7pm. One lady thought it had been a  car crash on the estate, another thought it was a plane...

Just had a nice hot curry for dinner (heat that is not too spicy lol)

Chobham 'mini-tornado lifted cats in air'
The storm brought down trees across several counties

A "mini-tornado" brought down trees, damaged property and even lifted cats in the air, an eyewitness has said.

People living in Chobham in Surrey said the wind hit the area at about 17:00 GMT on Saturday.

The storm is also reported to have swept through Kent and Sussex. One person said it was "like something out of a Steven Spielberg film".

Shirley Blay

About 13,000 customers were left without power in Kent, Sussex and Surrey after storms on Saturday.

On Sunday, UK Power Networks said the number had been "significantly reduced", although about 1,100 customers were still affected.

Fire crews from East and West Sussex said they took dozens of weather-related calls on Saturday afternoon and early evening.

Surrey Fire and Rescue said its control room took a series of calls reporting fallen trees and damaged roofs across the county.
'Damage everywhere'

Shirley Blay, who keeps horses at the Jolly Blossom Stables on Station Road, Chobham, told BBC Surrey: "It was a mini-tornado, I can't describe it as anything less.
Destroyed shed Shirley Blay said the shed was thrown backwards and broke into four pieces

"It started with very heavy rain, hailstones and very strong wind and all of a sudden, the wind was very, very strong, to the point of lifting roofs.

"Stable roofs were shaking and lifting and my granddaughter went to make a feed up for the pony and the shed she was in lifted.

"She jumped out of it and it just shattered, it was thrown backwards and broke into four pieces.

"We've got four feral cats in the yard and they were being lifted off the ground - about 6ft off the ground - they just went round like a big paper bag."

She said the people and animals who were caught up in the storm were uninjured.

A spokesman from Valgrays Animal Rescue in Warlingham said: "It was like something out of a Steven Spielberg film.

We had an impromptu fire display from the power cables that lasted several hours”

Steve Wyles

"The sky went black, hailstones the size of 50 pence pieces hammered down on the ground, bouncing back off the ground so high.

"Our fencing, which was only just put up, shattered and span around on the ground. Thunder and the lightning was horrific.

"This came and went within 10 minutes, it was like a whirlwind - just swept through our village and left leaving damage everywhere."
'Too strong'

Steve Wyles, from Hunton in Kent, said: "A mini-tornado hit us at just after 5:15pm.

"It lasted less than five minutes but it brought down power cables and lifted the roof off an 80ft by 20ft barn over an oak tree and dumped it 70ft away in a field.

"As the wind hit I had the front door open and it was too strong for me to close it.

"We had an impromptu fire display from the power cables that lasted several hours and we are aware of at least one dog that was electrocuted by stepping in a puddle."

Laura Gilchrist from the BBC Weather Centre said: "Eye witness descriptions and photos of the damage suggest that an isolated small tornado could well have occurred in Chobham, however without an expert visiting the site or footage or photos of the tornado itself, it cannot currently be confirmed that a tornado was responsible."
