Archbishop of Canterbury in Norwich - first stop...

Postby chenrezig » 14 Mar 2013, 15:36

There wasn’t that much publicity about the visit to Norwich by the new Archbishop of Canterbury to Norwich – I didn’t find out about it til late last night.

I thought I would pop along to the Forum where Radio Norfolk said he would be starting from, to walk to Norwich Cathedral ,.. there weren’t that many people to start with but by the time he arrived the crowd was huuuuggge! As he said when he started speaking  “With a crowd this size if the Bishop wasn’t behind me I’d be doing a runner!”.

I have to say not being a “churchy person”  if you will excuse the phrase, I was well-impressed by him as he spoke.

I hope you enjoy the pics? I did take some video but the SD card must be faulty as it ran halfway through then got all crackly n the sound went out of sync.

Keep an eye out on About Anglia tonight 6pm to 6.30pm, and Look East from 6.30pm to 7.00pm

This last one is while he was walking round the inside labyrinth, I wasn’t the only one who was taking pics, so I took the opportunity to take it while the Press were doing their thing, wouldn’t have dreamt of it otherwise …

I liked what the Archbishop said in Norwich today about everything is decided with prayer.
I think he will be a great man.
Also the new Pope sounds a real man of people.
It is very encouraging.

The new Archbishop of Canterbury was greeted by hundreds of well-wishers outside the Forum in Norwich today.

The Most Revd Justin Welby was visiting the city on the first of a five-day pilgrimage around the country in the lead up to his enthronement at Canterbury Cathedral.
He told the crowd of his childhood holidays in Norfolk and led a prayer for the region to pray against deprivation and unemployment.

After interviews with the press, the Archbishop made his way around the crowd handing out cards.

Helena Crockford, 46, from Reepham said: “This is the first place he’s been to and we should be here to encourage that. “It’s a lovely and engaging thing to do and I admire his choice.” Gordon Baldry, 43, from Taverham, who asked the Archbishop to sign his bible, said: “I thought it would be a fitting thing to do. It was really nice. I wasn’t sure if he would sign it.”

Around 80 children from church schools in Harleston and Dickleburgh were at the Forum to greet the Archbishop and they formed part of the crowd which he then led through Norwich to the cathedral where he will spend the afternoon. The Archbishop’s pilgrimage will conclude with Choral Evensong at 5.30pm before he sets off to Coventry. His pilgrimage will also take him to London, Truro and Chichester.

It gave me a shock when I saw it when I got the paper today lol

I did stand with the Press as I figured out they would know more about where he would be standing to do his speech n his prayer ... In the end I think it was a lady vicar sorted it out ... One of my neighbours who has a walker frame and had been there nearly 3/4 hour waiting to be able to get a good view kept having a lady who had just got there shove in front of her, so I had to slowly push back as if I hadn't seen the lady and pushed her back out of the way... I took a pic for another lady who couldn't get though the crowd, got her a lovely close-up "head n shoulders" of the Bishop of Norwich and the Archbishop together ...

It wasn't well-organised at all, they kept asking the crowd to move back to give the children sitting on the steps a bit more room but they just wouldn't move, no police to help manage the crowd, just a couple of PCSO's who just watched. There were so many people milling about  we decided to stay put until the crowd had just about cleared..

I was well-impressed by him, so relaxed and "natural" ... I have hopes to ...

Thankyou for the photos Liz, they are really good, it was a pleasure to look at them. I hope and pray that this man will do a lot of good for the common people. I don't know much about the new pope as yet, but looking forward to seeing what he will do. x Jeanne
