Knitting for Carers Week

Postby wendy » 04 Mar 2013, 15:50

We felt it would be nice for our knitters in Chill  to do something for Carers week in June.

http://www.carersweek.org/
We have two options for you, one is easier than the other.
If you could do what you can and post them to me, to arrive for June 1st.

Community Knitting Project in Norwich
Peter Taylor Funeral Service in Hellesdon is aiming to help local communities with knitting activities.
http://www.mylocalfuneraldirector.co.uk/

1. They are hoping to sell hand knitted poppies in their funeral homes for Remembrance Sunday to raise much needed funds for The Royal British Legion.

2.They are also looking for 6” (15cm) squares in garter stitch (plain knit). They intend to stitch these together to make blankets for local care homes. Using 3.25 mm needles.  You can stitch these to make a length of 8 different squares if you wish.

Small Poppy - Debbie Bliss Andes colour (370008) skein (would make 2 poppies) and small amount of black
Large Poppy - Patons Orient in red 50g ball (would make 2 poppies) and small amount of black onyx round bead 8mm
Any double knitting yarn can be used.
Roller locking pin.
Sewing needle to attach pin and bead and sew petals together
---------------------------------------------------
Cast on 7 sts using thumb method and red yarn
Knit 1 row
KFB (knit forward and back into same stitch) Purl to last 2 sts, KFB, Purl 1
KFB, knit to last 2 sts, KFB, knit 1 (11 sts)
KFB, purl to last 2 sts, KFB, knit 1 (13 sts)
Knit 1 row
Purl 1 row
(repeat last 2 rows if you require a larger petal size)
SSK (slip 2 sts on to right needle, put back onto laft needle and knit together) SSK. knit to last 4 sts, knit2 tog, knit 2 tog (9sts)
Repeat last row in pattern (5sts)
(If you want to make the large poppy just insert a pearl row, knit row, purl row here)
Purl 1 row
SSK (slip stitch knitways) K2 tog, K2 tog, (3sts)
Purl 1 row
Cast off remaining stitches
For both poppies using black cast on 18 stitches using cable method, then cast off leaving long thread end, over sew along edge of topof cast off and pull tight to create a spirl/ball for centre of poppy and secure tightly.
Sew all poppy petals into a centre piece and add black centre pieces.
Embellish with black onyx bead or button of your choice.

"So far we have received so many squares and in fact completed blankets that we have now 17 blankets.  We gave 4 each to Woodlands Care Home and Redlands Care Home yesterday at a little get together for the care home staff and our knitters.  We have four each now to go to Northgate and Sunnycroft."

The squares are 6 inches or 15cm.  Knitted in double knitting wool in plain knit (garter stitch), although we have also received some in moss stitch and ones that have been crotcheted.  We also have crotchet poppy patterns if you wish.

4  Please help us to knit some things for Carers Week in June.
Can be squares which will go as blankets for nursing homes in Hellesdon, or poppies which will be for sale later in the year.
The residents had made the thank you card themselves in the first picture.
But we need your work by 30th May
thank you

could you please let us know if anyone will knit some squares or poppies.
I don't want to say we will do this, and then we wont have any to hand over.  I would rather know if no one is able to help now, rather than in June.
thank you

Your poppy looks really good Annie.

Re photobucket, You can find a link to customize your upload sizes on the main upload page. It's located near the top-right corner of the drag-and-drop window, you can then select size you want.
