Edith Cavell Van
Posted: 10 Oct 2015, 17:13Visited the railway carriage/van that brough Edith Cavell's body back to England after WW1.
It was also used to bring back the body of the Unknown Warrior - they had a replica coffin in the carriage with a little altar at one end.
It was also used after that to bring back the body of a Captain Fryatt, also shot during WW1 by the Germans, he had been sailing a civilian ship from England to Holland when it was threatened by a German submarine - he sailed his ship at the submarine forcing it to dive, foiling the intended torpedo attack. he rather rashly continued sailing across the North Sea, and in 1916 was intercepted by German destroyers, arrested, tried and shot .. If you have seen Ian Hislop's programmes on WW1 you will have heard the story..
