Local Council handyperson service

Postby maureenho » 27 Sep 2012, 17:12

I was talking to a lady today from our local council in South Norfolk and she has made me aware of this handy person service who can help the over 65's and disabled people with small DIY jobs around the home and in the garden, it might pay you to look at your own local council's website to see if they have the same or similar service, as a result of this conversation Louize can use this service to have a handy person do a bit of tidying up in her garden, they are phoning me next week to arrange something.

This is what South Norfolk Council offer......

Your Handyperson Scheme can cover:-

Gardening – one off clearance, including weeding, general mow and tidy up.
Home Safety – Smoke detectors, keysafes, grab rails, removing trip hazards.
Home security – Security Locks, door chains, door viewers, window locks
Minor electrical work- wiring plugs, replacing fuses
Minor plumbing – Replacing tap washers, fitting new taps
Home energy efficiency – draught proofing, fitting low energy light bulbs, pipe insulation, loan of energy monitor
    De-cluttering service
General repairs & minor jobs – installing telephone cables, shifting furniture, small carpentry jobs, easing sticking doors, fixing curtain rails, lowering shelves, cleaning gutters, repairs to fences and gates

We have a similar scheme in Broadland part of Norfolk. I have used them.  The man came and painted the white bits on the front of my house around my new double glazed windows.

On our one we get 2 hours free and then at a reduced rate,

They are currently updating their website and services and doing a leaflet.

Apparently there used to be a service like that in this area but council cut-backs mean it's no longer happening.

Thanks Mo. We have a local Age Concern Handyperson. I have never used them but friends have said that they are very good. When we move, I am going to ask them to put up some shelves and probably some curtains. x Jeanne

I used our scheme some time back but was shocked to find that they charged me £75 just to change some tap washers

That's far too much money Annie, they should have told you that before they did the job. x Jeanne
