Childhood holidays

Postby wendy » 19 Oct 2014, 10:38

I was thinking about holidays I had as a child and wondered if we could share our holiday memories.
We lived in the midlands and owned 3 caravans at Ingoldmills, near Skegness, so weekends we would have the long journey to Skegness.
Sometimes we went and never even saw the sea.
After these were sold we had a boat on the River Trent, so it wasnt so far to travel.  Every weekend we would be sailing and the sad thing was we could not swim.
I can remember a holiday in Cornwall, when my step father got bit on the lip by a wasp on Lulworth Cove.  Another holiday was the New Forest, I think this was when we went to the Isle of Wight for the day.
Most of the long school holidays were spent with my grandmother in Lincolnshire.
As I started into work, I took a group of friends to Wales in a caravan for a week.  It was my car so I did the driving.
Another time I went with a group of friends to Lake Como in Italiy.  What a long journey that was, by train and by coach.  The thunderstorms were terrible.
These are my memories, I would love to hear your holiday memories.  As an only child I was always on my own, until I started work and took friends with me.

I only recall going away twice in my childhood as we didn't have much money. My Auntie Lizzie took me away  one year to Southport, I was about 5. We stayed in a boarding house and it was owned by a Catholic family ( Auntie Lizzie & family were staunch Catholics - mum converted to Cof E when she married dad). I was fascinated with all the  crucifixes, the statuettes and holy water & when I got home I wanted to go to the Catholic church -Mum was not best pleased & that was the end of hols with Auntie Lizzie.
The only other hol we had was when I was eleven, we went to St Annes & I really enjoyed that, the weather as lovely & we spent a lot of time on the sands

We didn't have much in the way of holidays when I was a kid as my mum got ill in 1960 when my brother was born, I was only 9 then, but Dad use to take us to the seaside quite a bit, we were very lucky that Dad had a car to take us to different places.

In the 1980's we had our own Caravan at Hemsby.

We always went to butlins when I was growing up I brought a photo home from mums one year we went away with my auntie and uncle and cousins I will try and put it on my phone and post it on chill

Annie I had to laugh when you told your mum you wanted to become a catholic,my friend was a catholic and I use to go to Saint Johns cathedral with her,I could never understand why I couldn't go in the confession box.
On time my gran was in the hospital when I went with my friend to confession with her,a couple of my mums brothers were younger then her, when they asked me where I had been and I told them, they started torment me saying I will tell your gran where you have been and she will tell you of when she comes home

Love Ann

I am enjoying reading these holiday stories.
I nearly forgot the most important thing about my holidays from the age of 9.
We used to come to the Norfolk Broads, sometimes twice a year.
Once we had a dear little cottage and the garden was full of roses., this was at Horning.  I have always remembered this holiday.
We took my grandma and she thought it was lovely.
Usually we had a cruiser boat and once she came with us and I have a picture of her driving the boat.
It was these visits to Norfolk, that made my family sell the family business and retire to Norfolk in 1960.
I am glad they did as I do love Norfolk and have spent many holidays in North Norfolk throughout my life.

I was thinking of childhood holidays when I went to Wisbech on the bus a few weeks ago, it was something I had wanted to do sicne my Great-Aunt Ada died in 1991...

Since me and my brother were very little the family used to spend a week in the summer staying with her and great-uncle Percy her hubby in their tiny two-bed terrace house in Ramnoth Road which was beside the Wisbech-Upwell railway -me n Bruv used to charge out the back on Thursday am at 10.30 to see the REAL Toby the Tram go past -how I wish we had taken a pic or two at the time. I can remember Great-Uncle Percy drawing me some daffs in a little hand-writing practice book that we had bought in Woolies in the marketplace there. Their house still had gas lighting, and had an outside loo - no bath, any washing was done in the sink in the kitchen. There was a door with a lift-up latch at the bottom of the stairs to the two bedrooms.

We used to travel there by rail at first, from Norwich then change at March to get the Wisbech train. Our first "job" when we got there was walk to the nearest chippies yo get chips for dinner .. we had  to cross the Wisbech-Upwell railway at the crossing at the top of Ramnoth Road.

We only had one Caravan holiday that I can remember .. that was at Caister in Norfolk I think? Me, Bruv, Mum and Dad, AND Dad's grandparents ! There are a couple of things I remember - one of the caravans gas pipes to the calor cylinder came off and gas was hissing out, Dad told the chap who was smoking a ciggy exactly what he thought of him! At some ppint we played a game of Happy Families all six of us squeezed round a little label inside as it was raining.

Mum's brother and his family once got a boat out and a spent a week with them of the two weeks they were here... they brought "Cissy" their cat with them -she once got down in the engine when Uncle Ken was checking the oil - it was a job to get her out lol me and my cousin Angela once "booby-trapped" her Dad;s ciggies .. wer had got to Gt Yarmouth and stopped off at Martyns and got some "snowflake pellets" to put in his ciggies .. we got a sewing needle and very carefully dug out some tobacco, put in the pellet, then very carefully repacked the 'baccy.. It was like a blizzard inside the cabin when the lit cigarette reached the pellet.

lovely thread to read  tha22222
enjoying all the memories from people.
we went to blackpool for a week every july, like everybody else did.
we went on the steam train which in itself has great fond memories.
good weather, packed beach with people in deckchairs, paddling, donkey rides, afternoon cabaret shows on the piers, pleasure beach rides
and loads of ice cream and candyfloss.
Dad went to the gas club at night for an hour or two( it was affiliated)lol
mum and me stayed in the boarding house , I played with the other children while the mums chatted.
one year we went to the aerodrome for the day to watch the planes take off, not sure how it happened but mum , dad and me got a ride over the sea and around the tower in a small private plane. It was fantastic....but....
the pilot had a son the same age as me 8......we were both sat next to the pilot and kept falling out (as kids do)
then the pilot jokingly said if we both don't be quiet he would drop us into the sea..... sp0 sp0 sp0 sp0
needless to say we shut up  sp0

so looking forward to these stories

I can remember one holiday we went in a small van which we had for business, and my parents slept in the back and I had to sleep under the dash board.  We went to the New Forest and parked right next to that bridge with the lovely river.  We got water from the river and washed in it.
