Norfolk kitten Maxwell’s leg is saved by TV ‘Supervet’ at a £3,700 cost
World class treatment given to a feline friend has broken the bank of a Norfolk cat rescue centre.

Maxwell the kitten is enjoying life on all four paws after his shattered leg was saved by the skill of Channel Four’s ‘Supervet’ Noel Fitzpatrick.

But now the Norfolk cat sanctuary Feline Care Cat Rescue in East Harling is appealing for help from feline fans to help cover their hefty £3700 bill.

Molly Farrar manager at Feline Care, said: “We knew it would be expensive, but we simply couldn’t bring ourselves to amputate the leg of such a young cat when we knew there was a realistic chance of saving it.”

The mischievous kitten was admitted to the rescue in East Harling after he apparently suffered the horrific injury when his owner pulled him out from playing behind an oven.

Maxwell’s treatment started at Knotts Yard vets in Watton, but it was soon clear that specialist surgery was required and x-rays were sent over to the ‘Supervet’. The small kitten was soon in the care of Mr Fitzpatrick at Fitzpatrick Referrals in Godalming, Surrey.

Ms Farrar said: “We are so grateful to Noel and his team for what they did.

“It took two surgeons three hours to operate, and Maxwell now has eight screws and a metal plate holding his humerus in place. The leg was weight-bearing within 24 hours; he’s a lovely little chap and he’s amazed us with his miraculous recovery.”

Within days, the sixteen-week-old kitten was able to place weight on his leg as he tucked into to his food and a new home with kittens his own age will be in place when he is fully recovered.

Cat lovers have already given £2000 towards the cost of Maxwell’s care but much more is needed.

update
Been back to vet today.
Vet delighted at his progress.
The leg stays on. Thank goodness.
Now its just a combination of time, rest, physiotherapy and gradual introduction to normal activities.
Unfortunately for him, going outside, over the wall and up trees and catching rodents is out of the question for a good few months but if healing continues as it is, possible in the future.
His leg is healing great, from a 90/degree angle turning the wrong way it is now down to a 10 degree angle.
The vet did terrific surgery.
The metal pin can stay in his leg permanently, he doesn't need another operation.
Archie is a great patient.
Going back to vet in 3 weeks, he had a long term steroid injection today to help strengthen his leg muscles to support the badly damaged ligament as he begins using the leg more.
He is still on anti inflammatory medication.
He was delighted to use his scratching post tonight and managed to put his weight on his leg for a few seconds.
I hope to stop getting punctured and perforated legs now and can stop using the sudocrem sp0

update
He is doing very well and the leg is getting stronger thankfully. He can now use it to have a good scratch behind his left ear which he has obviously been missing doing.
He still has a slight limp when he is walking but its getting better slowly. His fur is starting to grow back again on his leg too.
He made a break for freedom when I opened the kitchen door to put the bin bag out in the bin.
He was asleep when I opened the door slowly and thought it was safe, but he fooled me.
I managed to drop the bag, drop on my knees and grab his scruff all at the same time while he was negotiating the wall.
Getting back up was a bit difficult with my arthritic hip , cat in one hand and the other hand pulling myself up the door frame.
Cat disappointed at being grounded but soon cheered up with a pilchard lol
Managed to finally put the bin bag in the bin 3 hours later when oh came home from work.

Been back to vet, vet so pleased with his progress.
He even filmed his walking.
Leg back to 100% angle.
Got to go back in 3 weeks though as there is some concern over the metal pins in the knuckle causing the thin skin around the knuckle not healing very well. The pins seem to be rubbing the skin and may need an op to be removed depending on if the bones and ligaments have healed enough.
will keep you posted.
Cat very happy and playful.
Using his leg so much more .

Update
The cat is happy happy happy.
His leg is 95 % normal, he just has a slight limp which doesn't bother him.
He is enjoying life
going up and over the wall, up the trees, and exploring the surrounding fields and woodland.
I am so thankful to my vet for his wonderful surgery.

tha22222
He is back to doing what cats do well thankfully.
He went out after breakfast this morning looking beautiful after spending all night grooming his lovely white fur.
Came back at tea time almost unrecognisable
Covered in dried mud, dust , a few leaves, a small twig , a very dirty face, filthy paws thick with soil, and such a happy demeanour.
He rolled around on the carpet to get rid of the loose dust, leaves and twig, then used Oh's and my trouser legs to get free of the soil in his paws and claws
(ouch)
Back to using the cream on our newly perforated legs again do877
He had his supper, a half hearted wash, a quick play with his catnip toy and he is now sleeping like a baby in his igloo.
Its been worth it all to see him well again.
