go90  This is a tragedy of immense proportions - so sad that lives are devastated and so many lives lost.

We have a lot of Philipino men here working as fishermen - they have permission to come here and they are lovely cheerful hard working guys - they send money home and when their contract is over they return to their homes and hope they get another contract to come here again to work later.  They miss their families but separation is the price they pay in order to afford to provide homes for their families to grow up in.  The skippers they work for say they are mostly reliable and extremely hard working but at this time those men are frantically trying to find out what has happened at home in the hope that their loved ones have survived.

It is possible that the number of lives lost may be around 10,000. ca99

ca99  We live in a small town on the coast and many of the fishing boats have crew members from Philipines - they get permits to allow them to work here and they are conscientious workers.  They are lovely, cheerful people and enjoy being here as it enables them to earn much more than they could back home, so they can provide better for their families.  The locals try to make their time here as good as possible, eg at Christmas when all the boats are in port, events will be planned to socialise and have nice meals and of course every one receives a parcel containing clothing, sweeties etc, donated by locals.  They love to sing and they bring joy to the community - our hearts go out to them  xx
