"The Horror Channel has struck a deal to launch on Freeview, meaning that 19 million homes will soon have access to classic Doctor Who.
Currently only available via Sky or Virgin Media subscription, or Freesat's free-to-air service, Horror will appear on Freeview channel 70, between TruTV+1 and Motors TV, from Friday 13th March – unlucky for some, lucky for Doctor Who fans...
The Horror Channel is known for airing sci-fi, fantasy and, of course, horror programming, such as The Incredible Hulk, as well as films like Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth. However, it is most recognised as the only channel that regularly airs episodes of classic Doctor Who, covering the first seven Doctors, from William Hartnell to Sylvester McCoy (see a list of episodes and when they're next airing here).
According to The Horror Channel, the deal will open up the episodes to 19 million Freeview users, whereas only 3 million had previously tuned in to Who on Horror in the last two years.
The Horror Channel, which is operated by CBS AMC Networks UK, is the third channel from the company to move onto Freeview in the last 12 months following deals for CBS Reality and CBS Action. Speaking of the move, Tanya Gugenheim, Chief Business Development Office at AMC Networks International, said: “The channel already boasts a loyal fan base, and we’re pleased to introduce it to a broader audience through Freeview."
