Norfolk Carers supports local groups' fight for dementia nurses
A leading organisation for unpaid carers in Norfolk is getting behind the fight by local groups to save Norfolk's Admiral Nurses, who support families living with dementia, following a decision earlier this year by South Norfolk CCG to cut the service in the area.
Kevin Vaughan, from Norfolk Carers says:
"Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses who give expert practical, clinical and emotional support to families living with dementia to help them cope. We believe that this support improves the health and wellbeing of people dementia and their carers and reduces the risk of hospital admissions. Rather than cutting the service, we would like to see more nurses across Norfolk."
Dementia support groups in Wymondham, Thetford, Holt and Stoke Holy Cross are joining forces with Dementia UK ,and meeting today (7th December) to try to find a way of funding Admiral Nurses for the whole county.
Dianne Fernee, Organiser of Wymondham Dementia Support Group says:
“There are around 17,000 known sufferers of dementia in the county and that could represent at least 17,000 carers who also need support. By supporting the whole family, practically and emotionally, Admiral Nurses allow a person with dementia to stay at home with their loved one for as long as possible and can avoid the stress for the person with dementia, and their carer, that comes from their having to leave a familiar environment.”
Carers often tell me they can feel guilty and lonely when caring for someone with dementia and the Admiral Nurse service is a lifeline. We want to raise sufficient funding to be able to get these nurses for the whole of Norfolk.”
