What is our training and learning about?

We know from talking to Carers and also from the national carer organisations that Carers can have a wide range of learning needs to equip us for demands of caring.

We sometimes find it helpful to look at caring as a journey and naturally some of us are further along this than others. For some people who are new to caring this can be learning the basics of navigating around the Social Work Department or health services. For other people this may be learning more about specific health conditions. Some who have been on the caring journey for longer they may be looking at options for returning to work or volunteering to support others. Whatever your needs we would be happy to see if we can help support you with it.
What’s on offer

Currently more and more learning opportunities are available online, and many are free. Here is a list of some of the new ones that we know about:

One that is being offered is by Learning Curve Group and West Scotland College as distance learning and has a range of courses on offer that would be useful/interesting to people with a caring role. These are free and available to anyone aged over 16 and resident in Scotland. For more information click here and to download an application click here

You may know that we have been part of the National pilot for the Adult Achievement Awards and a number of Carers that we support have passed these with flying colours. We are still tutoring people through these and you can use any recent learning to get a nationally recognised qualification.

As part of the support from the Adult Carers Team we may be able to offer you an initial 1:1 service around any specific learning that would help you in your caring role. We can also help you with basic IT skills and access to get you up and running with these. Please have a chat with Patrick at the Centre about this, if you think it would be useful for you.
What’s coming up?

We are planning to shortly host the documents that are used by Dundee City Council as part of their community care assessment process and also for carer’s assessments. In the spirit of coproduction it might be useful to have a look at these documents before you meet with the Social Work Dept. to be clear about which areas you may want to focus on as a carer. They are currently going through some changes but I do have rough copies that I would be happy to share with you if you are interested.

We have arranged for our colleagues at Perth Autism to come through to lead a session around Autistic Spectrum Disorder. This will be on the morning on Tuesday 14 June. We are currently fine tuning the program but we are thinking about specific strategies on dealing with behaviour that challenges us. Do let me know if you would like to attend or anything that you think would be helpful to look at. More details coming soon so watch this space!

I am currently waiting to hear back also from Alzheimer’s Scotland who have agreed to come and do some work with us around dementia. Again we will have more details on this soon.

Moving and Handling Training

We offer free moving and handling awareness sessions to unpaid carers, in their own home, who provide care for a family member, friend, and neighbours with restricted mobility.

The training is offered to carers over the age of 18, can take place in the carers own home and can be tailored to suit individual needs. Through the training, carers can get advice and information on back care, in turn leading to fewer injuries for themselves. The training can also help carers feel more confident and knowledgeable in the safest moving and handling techniques.
