Relief as 'ludicrous' granny annexe tax is repealed

Postby annie » 13 Apr 2016, 11:20

Homeowners have expressed relief after the extra stamp duty set to be charged on granny annexes was withdrawn by the Government.

Earlier this month Telegraph Money revealed that buyers of homes with self-contained annexes would be charged a new 3pc stamp duty surcharge, introduced to discourage second home and buy-to-let buyers.

The extra tax was set to add thousands to the bills of home buyers, potentially discouraging them from buying houses with annexes and reducing the value of those homes.

Homeowners were especially baffled because homes with annexes had previously benefited from a council tax cut in 2014, which was an incentive for many to build them.

Charities and older people's groups condemned the move, calling it “morally wrong and economically illiterate”.
