HEALTHWATCH and Carers Isle of Wight have come together to improve support for unpaid carers on the Island.

Over recent months the organisations have met with Island carers and have identified some of the most common challenges that they are faced with.

One in nine people on the Island are currently providing unpaid support to family or friends due to age, physical or mental illness or addiction. This means that more than 16,000 people over 18 on the Island are carers.

As a result of their work Carers Isle of Wight organised and delivered a 'think carer' training session, which aimed to raise awareness of the immense difficulties faced by many carers on a daily basis.

These pressures could include the struggle to maintain a work/life balance and cope with the physical and emotional demands of the role.

Over 50 health and care professionals attended the event which promoted the services offered by Carers Isle of Wight, who can provide information and support to carers.

Cllr Richard Priest said: "The role that carers play in the local community is vital, and the recent training event provided an opportunity to highlight the contribution made by carers, as well as strengthen the support available."
