All the tickets for the Radio 1 Big Weekend have been snapped up as thousands of eager music fans clamoured to get their hands on a pair.

There were 25,000 pairs of tickets up for grabs for May 23 and 24, when Europe’s biggest-free music festival comes to Norwich.

At 8.05am the tickets were released, with most reserved for people living in Norwich and Norfolk.

With a high volume of people visiting the website, traffic was held in an online “waiting area”.

Many people in Norwich trying to get tickets were frustrated to be met with a web page message saying “we are currently processing the maximum possible number bookings we are able to handle at one time” and were told they were being held on the page until a space became available.

At 8.19am, BBC Radio 1 tweeted: “All #BigWeekend tickets for the wider UK have now been allocated. Tickets available now are for Norwich & surrounding area residents only.”

At 8.44am, there were 3,000 tickets left for Norwich city residents on Saturday and 1,000 tickets left for Sunday, but 116,000 people were trying to get through for those and by 8.50am all the tickets had been snapped up.

Once booking opened, a link appeared on the website to a secure site hosted by See Tickets, who are handling the ticketing process on the BBC’s behalf.

There is no charge for the event itself, but a handling fee of £3.50 per ticket will be applied.
