A seal found in a field in Newton-le-Willows 20 miles inland has been named Dumbledore by the RSPCA staff caring for him. The young male grey seal spent Christmas Day in the animal charity’s specialist seal facility at East Winch in Norfolk. He is thought to have a head injury.
The big lad is now called Dumbeldore. He is much more settled but needs a lot of vet attention in the coming days.
He has horrible thick nasal discharge and still looks very sorry for himself but other than that he is quite lively and quite large so we need to handle him very carefully with our expert team of adult seal handlers

Staff at East Winch are currently naming animals after characters in the Harry Potter books – with the seal named for the boy wizard’s headteacher at Hogwarts.
The seal, thought to be from a colony near Hilbre Island in the Dee Estuary, was taken to the RSCPA’s Stapeley Grange hospital in Nantwich after being rescued from farmland on Monday.
But he was transferred to Norfolk on Tuesday for further care. Staff there said he was drinking on arrival but not eating.
