Blustery winds on their way, but East Anglia expected to miss worst of wintry weather

East Anglia could experience “raw” winds of up to 45mph over the next few days as wintry storms make their way across Britain.

A yellow weather warning is in place for northern parts of the country, with severe gales of up to 80mph expected across North Wales, Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland.

Forecaster Phil Garner, from Weatherquest, based at the university of East Anglia, said last night temperatures plummeted to -4C at Santon Downham, near Thetford, and most places reached -1C or -2C.

While temperatures are expected to be above freezing for the next two nights and around 6C to 7C in the day, it will feel chillier because of the cold westerly wind, reaching around 35mph tonight.

Mr Garner said the “raw” wind would ease towards the end of the night, then pick up steadily throughout tomorrow, reaching 40 to 45mph tomorrow night and into Thursday morning.

He said: “There may be a few branches and fences down.”

Friday night and into Saturday morning, temperatures will drop again to around -3C and -4C.

What is a weather 'bomb'?

A Met Office "be aware" warning is running for parts of Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

Parts of western Scotland are braced for strong winds and "unusually high" waves, while there have already been a string of road accidents amid snow and ice.

But with newspapers predicting a UK weather 'bomb' for the second year running, what does the term actually mean?

BBC weather's Peter Gibbs explains.
