POLICE were called to a supermarket in Burnley as shoppers desperate for a bargain piled inside.

CCTV operators in the town called officers to Tesco at around midnight on Black Friday.

Traditionally an American marketing tactic, Black Friday sees stores give discounts the Friday after Thanksgiving, similar to the Boxing Day sales.

A police spokesman said Tesco did not call the police, and confirmed there were no scuffles reported.

He said: "There were thousands inside the store and around 400 waiting outside. The store had to close its doors briefly because it was so busy, so officers attended to make sure everything was ok."

A lady near me with a pushchair was moaning as I went over the shops to get some milk - she had just got off the bus and said it was crazy in the city, she had forgotten it was "Black Friday" - she said it was scary trying to get round all the crowds with a little buggy

I kept out of town and just went to the local market today.
