Scientists have called it the world's biggest study into just what causes dementia.

Some of that scanning has already taken place at UK Biobank in Stockport. Professor Paul Matthews leads the Brain sciences division at Imperial College, London, and is working closely with UK Biobank.
He said "Dementia is the greatest healthcare challenge facing the developed world. New clues suggest we need to broaden our research focus on the brain in the context of the whole body and the way it changes with age to find the triggers for Alzheimers and vascular dementia."
