Body building foods/energy foods
1954 Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
Schools had been providing meals to pupils before the war, but it was not until the Education Act of 1944 that the provision of free school meals and milk became a statutory duty. By 1951 school lunch was eaten by 49% of pupils. With a good proportion of children receiving this nutritional minimum, it is perhaps not surprising, if shocking, that a 1998 study by the Medical Research Council found that children in the 1950s were healthier than their 1990s counterparts. Interestingly, the promotion of fat, starch and sugar as positive elements in a diet, let alone as energy foods, is at odds with the message adopted later in the century.
