Stay safe on the road in frost, ice and freezing fog - some driving tips
Few of us have the choice not to drive to work on frosty mornings and since the last few days of 2014 are set to be cold, both by day as well as by night, here's a reminder of how to drive safely in frosty, icy weather...

In winter, it's important to regularly check your local weather forecast - on TV, or online - for warnings of icy or snowy weather. DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential. If it is, take great care, plan it, and allow more time for your journey.
Don't forget to carry an emergency kit of de-icer and ice scraper in the car. Also a torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel - you could even go as far as a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down.
"Tyres and tarmac" - when coming to rest at traffic lights or behind a car at a junction, leave enough space behind the car in front to see its tyres and some tarmac. This allows space for manoeuvre or error.
"Second is your friend" - try starting in second gear rather than first on a slippery surface. The wheels spin more slowly and you'll have better grip.
Here are a few reminders about driving safely in fog...
Use your lights as required
Try to keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front. Rear lights can give a false sense of security and distort distances, making things appear further away than they actually are
Make sure you can pull up well within the distance you can see clearly. This is particularly important on motorways and dual carriageways, as vehicles are travelling faster than on smaller roads
Use your windscreen wipers and de-misters
Beware of other drivers who may not be using their headlights
Do not accelerate to get away from a vehicle which is too close behind you. Check your mirrors before you slow down. Then use your brakes so that the brake lights warn drivers behind you that you are slowing down
At a junction with limited visibility, make sure top in the correct position and listen for traffic. When you are sure it is safe to emerge, do so positively and do not hesitate in a position that puts you directly in the path of approaching vehicles.
