Over 40s in Burnley offered free check-up

Postby annie » 07 Apr 2014, 08:59

Burnley people over the age of 40 are being urged to get a free health check from their doctor.

Nearly 80% of GPs in Lancashire will be sending out invitations for NHS health checks to identify factors that could lead to problems such as heart disease, strokes, kidney disease and dementia.

Lancashire County Council is working with doctors surgeries to promote the MOTs for people aged between 40 and 74, particularly men, who are less likely to visit their doctor.

Adverts featuring the message “Get an MOT to keep you running well” are appearing at shopping centres and petrol stations, as well as on beer mats in pubs and at football grounds. The campaign is also running on Twitter and Facebook.

County Coun. Azhar Ali, Cabinet member for health and well-being, said: “The free NHS health check is like an MOT for your body where doctors check your blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and look at other factors to find out how healthy you are.

“This will help them to take action that could stop you suffering a heart attack or stroke, and prevent other life-threatening diseases.

“That’s why it’s important to go for your NHS health check, even if you feel OK. “Some people are sceptical about health checks, but they give your doctor vital information that can help spot potential problems before it’s too late.”

So true Jane, they forget about carers caring at home.

It's a good thing to get a health check but many carers wouldn't have the time, I know I didn't have the time.
