9/11

Postby chenrezig » 11 Sep 2014, 06:08

The '9/11' terrorist attacks in New York.

In the aftermath, Prime Minister Tony Blair deployed British troops in the invasion of Iraq (March 2003), supporting the US President George Bush and his 'War on Terror'.

On This Day hijackers crashed two airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and thousands of those working in the buildings. Both towers collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others.

A third airliner was crashed into the Pentagon.

A fourth plane was redirected towards Washington, D.C., targeting either the Capitol Building or the White House, but it crashed in a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake control of the airliner. There were no survivors from any of the flights.

I was working at a training company on that day.

We had a TV to show training videos on, but no aerial for it. One of the 18-24 Gateway groups managed to fashion an old wire coat hanger and use it as an aerial, The whole company squeezed into a small training room to watch a rather "iffy" picture of the Twin Towers. Several of us tried the internet but the whole thing seemed to have crashed.

A colleague of mine, one of the Tutors was frantically trying to call a friend of hers who ocassionally worked in the Twin Towers but couldn't reach her -several hours of trying and she very relievedly managed to contact her safe in new York..

Would anyone else like to add her recollections?

I was sat watching the news while I had a cup of tea. Sam was at school and I had been cleaning.

i remember sitting there in shock thinking this must be a hoax. I think most of ius parents were a little late that day picking the kids up.

It was horrifying to watch.

I remember the day well, I was painting the ceiling in the living room and my daughter was talking to someone in America on her computer and they said 'turn the TV on now'  she shouted through to me what had happened and I nearly fell off the step ladder.
