I wrote to Freedom of Information Act and have highlighted my questions
Freedom of Information Act 2000
I refer to your request for information dated 09 August 2010.
In accordance with the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I have now processed your request.
As requested, I respond to your questions below:
How many of the Governments free laptops for children have been taken? As at 06 August, 3735 computers had been issued to families in Norfolk, though the Council were still trying to encourage more families to request application forms. Original data showed that around 5000 families in Norfolk could be entitled.
How many are left over? As this scheme is a national one there wasn't a certain amount allocated to each county, instead allocation was on a first come first served basis across the whole country. As at 09 August, only around 10,000 grants were still available out of an original 270,000.
The scheme was originally due to run until March 2011 but uptake has been so successful that all the grants are likely to be allocated in the next few weeks.
Why can't the council suggest that any that have not been issued could be given to 24 hour carers. The role of Norfolk County Council was to promote this scheme and encourage families and carers to request applications and offer some support and advice when necessary, either direct to families/carers or to schools, social workers or other relevant members of staff.
