Meals on Wheels

Postby Jeanne » 05 Nov 2013, 13:07

Has any one ever had these? our social worker recommended them after we had an accident in the kitchen. The first meals were delivered at 3pm. were tiny and inedible. I phoned up to complain and to cancel them, which caused some flurry in their office. They then asked us to try the Afro Caribbean, which weren't too bad the first time and were delivered by l2pm. since then we have had chicken and rice every week, which is ok because we only have it on Tuesdays, but the smell of the chicken is so awful that George said he will never eat chicken again! also the portions are small. We pay £3 each. So now I have paid up and cancelled. Are they any better in other parts of the country? I would be interested to know. Some people depend on these meals. Luckily we can just about manage by using the slow cooker and microwave. x Jeanne

you are lucky to still get Meals on Wheels, they have finished them for carers in Norfolk and many counties across the Uk also have stopped them.  But yours doesn't sound very nice anyway.
Have you ever considered these

and if you send me your area then we can look on google to see if there is anyone local.  Sometimes a local pub will deliver a good hot meal.

I remember some years back my mum had them once only and never again, she told them the food wasn't even fit to give to a dog.

You can get individual meals in Sainsbury's that just need heating up in microwave.

When I broke my leg and was non-wt bearing, I really struggled for meals & we ordered them from Wiltshire farm Foods,  most of them they were really good. many areas don't have meals on wheels now

Thankyou, I am going to look up Wiltshire Farm, they will be good to get in for the Winter. In Lambeth,  it is quite easy to get meals on wheels, I don't get them as a carer, but because I am disabled too. Somebody told me that they call them "muck on a truck!"

gpr  Meals on wheels have been discontinued for a good number of years here.  People who used to have them were told to have frozen meals delivered so that they could be thawed/heated in microwave.  At first everyone was advised to have Wiltshire Farm meals delivered but then people found that they cost more than meals on wheels had cost.  I don't speak from experience but what I have heard is that if you are going for ready meals, supermarket ready meals are just as good as Wiltshire but do not cost as much.

Maybe you could try out different ideas depending on which supermarkets you have near where you live - also worth finding out if any food suppliers deliver meals - as Wendy said maybe a pub near you would deliver meals and this could be a good way to enjoy lovely meals.  xx
