A GROUP of youngsters got a break from caring for their disabled relatives when they took part in an expressive painting workshop.

As part of a programme called inspired:arts, 11 young carers from the Redbridge Carers Support Service (RCSS) and Indigo Young Carers Service (IYCS) got a day off their caring responsibilities to get creative at the end of last month.

Organised by charity Create, the workshop was led by artist Sheridan Quigley, who helped the 11 to 24-year-olds put how they were feeling onto canvas.

The workshop was held at the end of August at IYCS’ base in Granville Road, Ilford.

Create’s chief executive Nicky Goulder stressed the importance of giving young carers a break, claiming that 48 per cent of carers feel stressed and 82 per cent feel their added responsibilities have a negative impact on their health.

She said: “The often worrying and time-intensive nature of caring can be a lot for young people to deal with.

“By engaging collaboratively through the arts, they are able to take time out, develop friendships and express themselves creatively.”

It is good to know that some people do care.
