Cromer Mayor to launch "Think Carer" service for unpaid carers - 29th July 2016

An exciting scheme to improve awareness of, and support for, unpaid carers in the local communities is being launched this week by Cromer's mayor, Tim Adams.
Cromer is one of the first towns to take up Norfolk's "Think Carer" initiative, which means that a series of individual support sessions for family carers will be held in the town on last Friday of each month, with Norfolk Carers offering advice, information and a listening ear.
The Individual Support Sessions, starting from Friday 29th July, will help carers to find out about and take up services, such as Norfolk Carers’ “Time for You" short breaks service, and to get the practical and emotional support they need from local carers' services.
Tim Adams, Cromer Mayor says:
“I am very proud that Cromer Town Council could support the funding for this initiative and I am sure that it will be successful in helping our older residents and carers identify and access all of the support available to them as well as providing a weekly social event.”
Murdo Alderton-Macleod, Norfolk Carers' Support Lead for the area says:
"North Norfolk has a high number of people caring for someone who is ill, frail or disabled or who has a mental health problem or addiction. Often, people in this situation don't think of themselves as being a carer and so struggle on, with their needs hidden from services in the community that can help them, yet we know that a bit of support can make a big difference to their health and wellbeing. "Think Carer" aims to raise awareness about the situation of unpaid carers amongst the local community and the wealth of help, advice and support available to them.

Adam Faulconbridge - Age Concern North Norfolk Business Support Officer says:
“Age Concern North Norfolk is proud to support Think Carer, which offers a regular pop-in social group; a great way of meeting people and making new friends in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere over a cup of tea and a biscuit. The group often organises speakers and outings and is happy to signpost people to local services.”
Mary Russell, the local Norfolk Carers Carers Awareness Champion says:
“The Think Carer Sessions represent great local partnership working and give local carers opportunity to chat, have a coffee and ask question and find out more can find out more about the services and support is available Think Carer! means that we can spread the word about what carers in our community need and reach more of our many hidden carers who are not receiving the support available.”
The launch event, which is taking place on 29th July at: Cromer Drop-In, The Cottage, 8 Louden Road, 11.30 am to 1.30 pm and will include information stalls from local carers' services, Norfolk Carers and Age Concern North Norfolk. Carers will be able pick up a copy of Norfolk Carers Handbook and get details on how to access services via the Advice Line - 0808 808 9876.
